 According to the American Optometric Association (AOA) more than 43 million Americans are suffering from cataracts or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the two leading causes of vision loss and blindness. Research has shown there is a strong correlation between good nutrition and the prevention of these age-related eye diseases. The (AOA) suggests eating foods rich in key nutrients such as antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, essential fatty acids, vitamin C and E and the mineral zinc. All of these nutrients can help protect eye sight and vision. Things you should know: In a recent survey conducted by the (OAO) 72% of of respondents age 55 and older noticed changes in their vision between 40-45 year of age. Many American (48%) believe that carrots are the best food for eye health, but studies show spinach and other dark leafy vegetables provide the best health benefits due to the large amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin. To keep your eyes healthy studies show that you should eat at least (1) cup of cooked spinach (4) times a week. More than 50% of Americans are not taking the recommended dose of Vitamin C daily.
