Thank you.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nBrenda T.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>DEAR BRENDA:<\/em> The titles vary from state to state but most interior designers in recent times have a bachelor\u2019s degree in interior design with training and certification. An interior decorator might be trained as well and hold an associate\u2019s degree in design.<\/p>\n<p>But I wouldn\u2019t get caught up in all the titles.<\/p>\n<p>There are many well known designers, such as Oprah\u2019s Nate Berkus, who do not have a degree in interior design but have a passion and talent for design along with extensive training in the design field.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing you need to consider when hiring a person to assist you with your design dilemma is to find someone who will meet your needs and expectations for the project.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips to help you hire the right decorator-designer for your project:<br \/>\n\u2022 Ask to see a portfolio of work.<br \/>\n\u2022 Get references and talk to previous clients.<br \/>\n\u2022 Prepare a budget and stick to your plan.<br \/>\n\u2022 Decide if you want to pay someone per hour or per project.<\/p>\n<p>\u2192If you\u2019re planning a remodeling project, make sure the person you hire is qualified to manage the construction or hire a contractor for that phase of the project and will work closely with the designer-decorator.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that the professional is creating a design that reflects your style, not his or hers.
