\nDEAR MI-LING:<\/em> I want to update my home for the upcoming holidays! I\u2019m having a large family gathering, but I\u2019m feeling a little self-conscious because my home is not that interesting.<\/p>\n

How can I make a few little changes that will give me a big impact and create a more interesting space under budget? My budget is about $500.<\/p>\n

Under Budget<\/em><\/p>\n

DEAR UNDER BUDGET:<\/em> With a little imagination, you can update your space for the holidays and create that “wow\u201d factor when your guests arrive by making a few little changes.<\/p>\n

To make the most of your budget, pick one or two items in the space that you can update quickly and make an impact without breaking the bank.<\/p>\n

My No. 1 choice for that “wow\u201d factor is to add color, either with paint or through accessories.<\/p>\n

Here are a few ideas I have used to make the most impact with the least amount of money by making a few critical changes in a space.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Repaint or glaze a wall.
\n\u2022 Reframe or repaint an existing picture frame for a totally new look.
\n\u2022 Use fabric remnants to cover a stool or create a tablescape.
\n\u2022 Paint or glaze your fireplace for an updated look or to add color.
\n\u2022 Update a light fixture or ceiling fan. Tip: Paint the fan blades.
\n\u2022 Switch out the chairs at the ends of your dining table to add character and\u00a0interest to the space. You can repurpose chairs from another room or even from an outdoor space. You can\u00a0 also purchase two new chair covers in a vibrant color.
\n\u2022 Change out or adorn lamp shades.
\n\u2022 Add beads or fringe to existing drapes.
\n\u2022 Add a rug with bold colors.
\n\u2022 Incorporate fresh, colorful flowers or table arrangements.
\n\u2022 De-clutter the space.<\/p>\n
