DEAR MI-LING:I\u2019m an HGTV junkie and over the years I have tackled some of the projects featured on the\u00a0different shows.<\/p>\n
One thing that I\u2019ve noticed is it takes me a whole lot longer to do these\u00a0projects and I usually end up having to seek out a professional to help me\u00a0finish the job. Would it be more cost effective to hire a handyman and how much\u00a0should I pay per hour? I\u2019m getting a little frustrated by my own limitations and my budget constraints.<\/p>\n

DEAR JANICE:\u00a0I<\/em> must confess that I love my HGTV too. I used to watch\u00a0 it so much that my husband once threatened to cut off the cable because I was\u00a0 always coming up with a new project, which meant tearing up something to make\u00a0 the improvements I wanted.<\/p>\n Recently, Kim\u00a0 Myles<\/a> from HGTV\u2019s “Myles\u00a0 of Style<\/a>\u201d was on my radio show and I asked her how many people it took to\u00a0 complete her room makeovers on the show.<\/p>\n Kim, an outstanding designer, assured me that all of her design concepts come\u00a0 from her but she does have a professional team that consists of about 20 people\u00a0 or more who take over the space and help her create those beautiful makeovers\u00a0 within a five-day time frame.<\/p>\n So, before you hire anyone to help with your projects be sure to get\u00a0 references and if possible stop by and look at some of their work. You don\u2019t\u00a0 want to hire someone who is not qualified in a specific area and end up having\u00a0 to pay more to get it done right.<\/p>\n Ask for bids from more than one person to get an idea of the price range.<\/p>\n Handyman service companies are popping up around the country.
